Josh and Michelle Bowen – SIMaid

Josh has a Project Management background in exporting agricultural products and Shell is a Paediatric Speech Pathologist.  Josh & Shell moved to West Timor in 2006, soon after getting married. Josh took on a contract with Opportunity International’s local partner to manage their Enterprise Development Services division. After completing this contract, Josh worked for a Dutch-based foundation and an AusAID funded livelihoods project.  Whilst in West Timor, Shell taught English at 2 orphanages and a local university.  In 2010, Josh completed his Masters of Social Development full-time at the University of NSW, Sydney.

What We’ll Be Doing

Josh is heading up a new initiative called ‘e3 Community Transformation’ in partnership with a local foundation to help marginalised communities address their community development needs (e.g. safe drinking water, sanitation, livelihoods and improved farming techniques).
e3 stands for empower, equip and enrich.

A participatory approach will be used that focuses on training and empowering local leaders to manage the development process.

Shell will initially be focused on helping our family to settle in, looking after Ethan and Eliana and developing relationships with other female staff they will be living amongst. She will also consider options to get involved in children’s programs, music classes, health clinics and helping develop a program to train kindergarten teachers
